Allergic Reactions – Does Food Make You Sick

Does Food Make You Sick?
A lot of people find they often suffer from strange symptoms after eating certain types of foods. It is not uncommon to feel itchy, break out in hives, swell up or even actually vomit. Effects like these may mean you could be suffering from a common food allergy.

Figures suggest an estimated 12 million Americans suffer from a variety of different food allergies. In most cases these allergic reactions are relatively mild but it is said that around 30,000 visits to the emergency room are reported each year due to a variety reactions and allergy to food and other materials. There may be as many as 200 deaths each and every year justifiably attributed to the effects of food allergies.

There have been various studies into food allergies and some seem to suggest that up to 8 percent of our children may have an allergy to some type of food. These numbers tend to be a little lower for adults at only around 4 percent so it may be that as we grow older we become more able to cope with these foods.

This may mean that many children will lose their food allergies as they grow older but many are likely to carry their allergies onwards into adulthood and continue to suffer from them for the rest of their lives.

If you know some foods give you problems you may find that eating prepackaged foods or eating out in restaurants or even at your friends homes can bring on food allergy problems because we may not be aware of ingredients used in the preparation of the food we eat.

You may hate having to ask the cook “what is in this?”, but the plain fact is that if you want to avoid allergic reactions you just have to ask. Knowing that the food is safe for you to eat can mean the difference between enjoying your evening and the food or having to have a trip to the emergency room at the local hospital.

Peanut allergies seem to be getting quite common and a lot of pre-packaged foods have recognized the problem and started including details on the label if they have used peanut oils in the preparation of the food and sometimes even if the processing of nuts is handled in the same factory.

There is, as yet, no cure for food allergies so for now, all you can do is to avoid any of the foods that seem to cause the reactions your body is unable to cope with.

Why Are Some People Allergic To Food

Allergic To Food

It is natural for us to eat food. We need food and most of us can eat almost anything but why are some people allergic to food? Food allergies are one of the most common types of allergy and they come in various levels of effect. It is said that up to 12 million Americans suffer from some type of food allergy but many people hardly even notice an allergic reaction to something they have eaten because the effects are minimal.

You get a lot of people who say they get wind, feel bloated or uncomfortable after eating certain foods. These may be minor allergic reactions to those foods. The most common culprits which cause an allergic reactive event are eggs, fish and shellfish, peanuts and other tree nuts. Many people might add spicy foods and onions to that list and there are lots of people who try to avoid milk and other dairy products and wheat products too. Corn and corn products may also cause allergic reactions, most commonly  in children.

For the majority of us the allergic symptoms experienced are an irritation and annoyance but for some people they can be life threatening.

Commonly reported symptoms include an itching in the mouth, on the eyes and skin, hives, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Sometimes these allergy symptoms will be accompanied by stomach cramps and wheezing, a shortness of breath or difficulty with swallowing. Other severe symptoms can include swelling. This swelling can be dangerous when it affects breathing. The swelling usually tends to focus on the face area causing swelling of the eyelids, lips, ears and tongue but can occur in the throat leading to difficulty breathing.

Some people may experience changing mood swings and depression is another symptom.

The most severe and dangerous allergic reaction symptoms can result in death. Around 200 deaths each year are reported to be caused by initial allergic reactions and secondary complications.

There is no such thing as a cure for food allergies. Allergy shots have been developed which can help with many of the different types of allergies, none have as yet, been successfully made which can prevent the reactions to food allergies.

The best advice for people who suffer with allergies seems to be avoidance of  those foods that cause the allergic reaction. Epinephrine can help relieve the symptoms, and is often carried by people diagnosed with food allergies to be used in an emergency. Reading the labels on foods can help if you know what types of foods cause you problems and the most well known is probably peanuts and peanut oil used in many different food products.

Allergies And Their Affect On The Human Body

All About Allergies And How They Affect The Human Body – We all love to see flowers in the Spring but if you’ve ever tried inhaling the scent of a beautiful flower and got some pollen up your nose from the plant, or you have tried eating something you are not used to and afterwards discovered that you were covered in red blotchy spots or experienced some other strange reaction after you ate, then you have most likely just experienced first hand some of the effects of Allergies on the human body.

The most common use of the term Allergy is to describe an adverse reaction in your body to what is called an allergen. Allergens are the thing that causes allergic reactions within the human body.

The effects when your body comes into contact with an allergen. – Ingesting an allergen or something that causes an allergic reaction in your body encourages your immune system to become hyperactive in response to this material. The effect of this is that your immune system activates to try to destroy what it sees as a threat but it may be mistaken and the material is quite harmless and causes no problems or bodily reactions in most other people.

As the body’s immune system releases antibodies as a response to fight off the allergen, it causes the release of histamine into the bloodstream. Histamine is what causes you to get teary-eyed and have a runny nose and other allergic symptoms.

Some Of The Common Allergens People React To – Most people who experience allergic reactions find the most common source of allergic reactions is from food they have eaten. Often these reactions occur as a result of eating shellfish, mushrooms, or even something that seems innocuous and mundane like certain vegetables. Since we take food inside our bodies allergic reactions from food are quite common but there are plenty of other possibilities of allergic reactions. Anyone who has ever been stung by an insect and experienced excessive swelling from the locality of the bite may have suffered from an allergic reaction to whatever materials were injected into the body from that bite. Some people may even experience extreme allergic reactions to a bee sting which can cause an anaphylactic reaction but this is not usually the case for most people.

Other sources of allergic reactions may be chemicals and even some medicines so when you have antibiotics prescribed by a doctor they will want to be sure you don’t have some sort of allergy to the materials used in the medicine.

Treatment and avoidance of allergies – If you have any reason to suspect that you are experiencing an allergic reaction to something, you should consult your doctor. Your doctor will examine you and consider whether to refer you to an allergist. Allergy specialist doctors will have great experience of allergies and how people react to different materials and will be able to advise on the best way to avoid the problem and, or, reduce their effects. They will be able to carry out testing on your suspected materials and establish if your suspicions are correct and prescribe any appropriate medicines and give you advice on what you can do about your reaction. Sometimes, the antihistamines which are often prescribed may not be enough even though these are the most common medicine prescribed to combat allergic reactions.

It may be you just have to try to avoid contact with the allergen that causes you problems and possibly change your lifestyle to avoid coming ionto contact since exposure could possibly lead to disastrous responses from your body. You need to fully understand what exactly the materials are that you are allergic to. When you know this you can avoid even small trace quantities of it in other things. Avoidance is the surest way of preventive treatment as you cannot have allergic reactions to something when you aren’t exposed to the allergens.

One way that an allergy can be treated in some cases is by giving the allergy sufferer immunotherapy whereby the doctors will expose the person to minute quantities of his or her allergen. The idea behind this is that the immune system learns to cope with these materials and it can develope immunity and this can prevent future allergic reactions to that material. This tends to be particularly effective for airborne particles but rather less effective when it comes to food allergies, which might cause reactions even though you’ve undergone treatment.

Most People Have Allergies – It is important to understand that most people do have allergies of one sort to another. They may be minor and go almost un-noticed as responses vary widely when it comes to allergic responses. If you can establish any allergen that affects your body and causes a reaction you can attempt to avoid it and prevent the unpleasant reactions of your body. You can also get treatment to help you to develop immunity and reduce or even completely remove the allergic reaction you normally experience from your body.
